This iconic Dhauligiri Circuit Trek allows you to experience the lifestyle of the Magar community, get a glimpse of the Mustang region, and explore the base camp of the world’s seventh-highest mountain – The Dhaulagiri (8167 meters). Throughout the 17-day journey into the heart of the Himalayas, you will get an opportunity to take in the stunning Himalayan landscapes, high-altitude passes, dense jungles, and terraced farms.

As you climb to a higher elevation, the landscape changes from rich farmlands to rugged mountain terrain. Therefore, prepare to traverse the complex routes of alpine meadows, and mountain terrain as you enjoy the breathtaking panoramas of the snow-capped peaks along the way. This trek takes you to two high-elevation points.

The 5,360-meter French Pass and the 5,240-meter Dhampus Pass are the most challenging passes that demand physical fitness, high morale, strong mentality, and proper acclimatization. Coming well-prepared for the adventures along the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is highly recommended.

Also, remember that Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is not recommended for trekkers with no prior high-altitude trekking. You must overcome several challenges including snowy tracks, camping in tents, traveling to remote villages, and walking through dense forests.

17-Days Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek: Memories along the Adventurous Trail

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is an adventurous journey that mostly takes you along the off-the-beaten paths of the Himalayas and across the rugged terrain. However, upon completion, you will find a rewarding experience of achieving a difficult trekking fete.

Your journey into the remote region begins upon arriving in Kathmandu. From Kathmandu, you will drive to Durbang and enter the Dhaulagiri region via Beni. 17-Day Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek: Alternative Trekking Trails in Nepal

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is an adventurous journey into the heart of the Himalayas. Though exciting, and equally rewarding, this trek is recommended only for seasoned trekkers with prior experience in the high-altitude region of Nepal. Therefore, novices can take on some of the simpler routes.

For an exhilarating experience of the Himalayas, we recommend taking on the Annapurna Base Camp trek. It is suitable for travelers with good stamina and physical fitness but no prior trekking experiences. This trek shares a similar feature as that of the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, where you visit the local Gurung and Magar villages, and walk past terraced fields, rhododendron forests, and the rugged terrain.

If you are looking for an even shorter trail in the Annapurna region, we would recommend the Poon Hill or Mardi Base Camp trek. Both treks can be completed in a week. Despite being short and comparatively simpler, it still takes you deep into the Annapurna region giving you impressive views of the tall mountains along the way.

Away from the Annapurna region, you can take on the luxury Everest Base Camp trek if comfort is your top preference. If not, you can still go on the classic EBC trek along the foothills of the world’s tallest peak – Mount Everest.

We also offer customized trekking packages where you can mix various circuits per your preference. Our tailor-made packages further allow you to spend extended days in your preferred destinations.

Best Time for Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in 2025 and 2026

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is only available in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). If you book your trek for the spring season, you can expect pleasant weather with clear skies. The trail is covered with blooming rhododendron flowers, adding vibrant colors to the Himalayas. However, there are still chances of snow in the higher-altitude areas. So, we recommend preparing well for the adventures that may lie ahead.

Likewise, autumn is the peak season. The autumn foliage takes over the Himalayas creating a plethora of colors along the trail. You will find more reliable and stable weather which is ideal for trekking the rugged trails of the Dhaulagiri circuit. But, watch out for the stronger winds as you reach higher elevations.

Considering the risks and dangers during the monsoon and winter, the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is only possible in spring and autumn. The trails, including the high passes, are closed due to excessive snow and frigid winter conditions. In the monsoon, there are high possibilities of landslides and floods. As a result, the Dhaulagiri Circuit Treks cannot be operated in these seasons.

However, due to the change in global temperatures, we have been experiencing a season shift. All seasons start 4 to 6 weeks later than usual. Therefore, if you are in Nepal in the monsoon and winter months, you can check with Orbit Alpine Adventure and confirm the trekking possibilities at your desired times.

Today is your final day in Nepal. Enjoy the allure of the beautiful city one last time before you leave for your next destination.

Prepare for a short flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. The 25-minute scenic flight reveals the stunning landscape including mountains, glaciers, rivers, and lakes from a bird’s eye perspective. Once you reach Pokhara, you can relax by the Phewa Lake.

A short drive from Fewa Lake takes you to the other popular, but relatively secluded Begnas Lake. Alongside the Kali Gandaki River, the majestic mountains stand tall, creating a dramatic landscape.

Jomsom is the administrative center of Mustang District. You will get a glimpse of the traditional Mustang customs here. The traditional villages and architecture of Jomsom are equally mesmerizing. Take the opportunity to explore Jomsom and immerse in the local lifestyle.

From Yak Kharka, we head toward Marpha. As you enter the lower altitude, you will find a different landscape with lush pine and rhododendron forests, farmlands, and sparse settlements along the route.

After days of gruesome trek, enjoy the picturesque villages, lush greenery, whitewashed houses, and cobbled roads as you enter Marpha. From Marpha, you can also get a glimpse into the Tibetan-Buddhism lifestyle of the people, and briefly experience Mustang customs, and traditions.

We recommend trying the famous apple brandy and taking some home for your folks. Also, you finally have internet access. Upload your adventure on your social media. Make sure you tag Orbit Alpine Adventures.

You will journey across yet another tough pass, the Dhumpus Pass. This is the exit to the Hidden Valley. Today’s trek will include a tough journey across glaciers as you ascent toward the Dhampus Pass. From here, you can get a panoramic vista of Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Tukuche Peak, Sita Chuchura, Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, Thorong Peak, Yaskawa Kan, and Puth Hiunchuli, and along with the view of the Kali Gandaki Gorge.

From Dhumpus Pass, you will start a gradual descent of approximately 1,000 meters to Yak Kharka. Yak Kharka is the grazing ground for the yaks. This pastureland is relatively warmer than the higher elevations. Therefore, despite having to camp for one more night, the cold won’t bother you as much here.

Prepare for a day of strenuous ascent as you push toward the highest altitude of the trek. Located at 5,370 meters, the journey to French Pass begins right after breakfast. Your journey begins with a steep uphill climb along the Dhaulagiri Range as you cross over several glaciers. The route is rugged and therefore you will need to trek with caution.

After several hours of trekking, you will finally reach the French Pass. The beautiful view of Tukuche Peak, Dhaulagiri I, Tashi Kang, Sita Chuchura, and the magnificent landscape compels you to forget the difficult trek as you immerse into the beauty of the Himalayas.

After spending time in the French Pass, you will descend to the Hidden Valley. You won’t find proper lodges for accommodation. Therefore, set camp and spend the night beneath the stars.

Today, you will trek to the Dhaulagiri Base Camp walking past dense forests. The 7-8 hour trek is challenging but equally rewarding. You will begin your ascend through the rugged landscape trailing the Myagdi Khola. Cross the Dhaulagiri moraine and navigate through the Chhongardan Glacier as you take in the mesmerizing view of the Dhaulagiri massif.

Upon reaching the Dhaulagiri Base Camp, gaze at the stunning panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and surrounding peaks. You will set camp amid the breathtaking alpine landscape.

On the first day, you arrive in Kathmandu via Tribhuvan International Airport. A representative from Orbit Alpine Adventures will receive you and help you transfer to your hotel.

After reaching the hotel, take some time to rest. In the evening, you will meet your expedition team and guide. The guide will provide safety instructions and trek briefings. Pay attention to the instructions as they are crucial for a safe and memorable adventure around the Dhaulagiri Circuit.

You have the rest of the evening to yourself. Take a stroll around the tourist hub of Thamel. There are several cozy cafes where you can hang out with your team. However, excessive alcohol intake is not recommended as you leave for your Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek early the next day.

After a week-long expedition, you get a rest day at the Italian Camp to allow your body to acclimatize to the Himalayas. Acclimatization is crucial during high-altitude treks. It allows your body to get used to gaining elevation and prevents altitude-related illnesses. Altitude sicknesses are common in these areas and they can be severe and require immediate descent, or even helicopter rescue.

To get used to the conditions, you will hike to a viewpoint and spend some time. The viewpoint gives you a panoramic view of the Dhaulagiri Massif and other surrounding peaks. After taking in the majestic views, you will head back to your lodge/teahouse and rest.

Today, you will begin your ascent to the Italian Camp. The trek begins along the Myagdi Khola, across a lush forest. En route to Italian Camp, take a wooden bridge to cross the Myagdi Khola which then takes you to a vast pastureland. As you gain altitude, you will walk through landslide-prone areas eventually leading you to the Choriban Khola.

After a brief break, continue the ascent through dense forests, embracing scenic landscapes, toward the Chhonbarban Glacier. The glacier marks your entry into the high-altitude alpine region. From here, the terrain is more demanding, but the breathtaking mountain vista of Tukuche and Dhaulagiri I keeps you moving forward.

You will finally reach the Italian Camp after crossing the Chhonbarban Glacier. Immerse yourself in the mesmerizing beauty of Dhaulagiri II, Dhaulagiri III, Dhaulagiri IV, and Tukuche from the Italian Camp. Due to the proximity of Dhaulagiri from your camp, you can stand eye-to-eye with the world’s 7th tallest peak as you embrace its majestic beauty.

After breakfast in our camp, you will leave Dobhan and head out into a dense rhododendron and bamboo forest. Next, cross a bridge across the Myagdi Khola and continue your journey along the circuit trail. As you ascent toward Sallaghari, you are rewarded with a beautiful view of Dhaulagiri I. Continue your trek along the eastern bank of Myagdi Khola, then across Paklte Khola until you finally arrive in Sallaghari where you set up camp for a much-deserved rest.

Our journey today takes us through the winding trails through the lush Jyhardan forest as we descend toward the western bank of the Myagdi Khola. You will find several honeycombs and witness the intricate process of honey collection. We follow the trail leading to Dapcha where we camp for lunch.

After a well-deserved lunch break amid the picturesque landscape, our journey continues through a challenging terrain comprising steep and slippery stones. We then hike along the bamboo and rhododendron forests until we reach Dobhan, where we spend the night in a comfortable tented camp.

Today, our journey takes us from Naura Bhir to Bagar. Bagar is a remote village along the Dhaulagiri Circuit trail that offers a quaint camping spot. This is also the final village in the circuit, and you won’t find any settlements beyond this point.

Since the trek takes you through off-the-beaten paths, you will not find tea houses on the trail. Therefore, you can either pack your lunch from Naura Bhir or set lunch camp on the way and prepare your meal there.

Despite the hardship, the amazing views of Manapathi Peak, Sita Chuchura, Dhaulagiri I, Dhaulagiri V, and Gurja Himal will leave you mesmerized as you continue your trek to Bagar. In Bagar, set up camp amid the serene nature, and enjoy the quiet ambiance.

After a long and tiresome drive from Kathmandu, we take another jeep ride en route to Naura Bhir or Naura Camp. The journey takes us along the bank of Myagdi Khola, across grassy hills, low-alpine forests, remote villages, and steep slopes.

A 3-hour ride from Durbang takes us to Bagar where we take a brief break. Soon, we set out on an hour-long hike to our destination in Naura Bhir. Accommodation options here are limited. You can either stay at the homestay in the village or sleep in a tented camp.

Wake up early to start your Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek adventure. Today, you will be driving through the scenic roads of Nepal. The jeep journey departs from Kathmandu early in the morning. You will find highway shops, farmlands, and sparse settlements as you drive along the banks of several rivers that lead you to Pokhara.

From Pokhara, you will head to Durbang, journeying through picturesque landscapes along the Himalayan foothills that welcome you to the Dhaulagiri region. As you take the 12-hour drive to Durbang, you will find local communities' diverse cultures and traditions.
