13 Days Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake: At a Glance

Among several trekking expeditions in Nepal, I can vouch that the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is among the most fascinating adventures. Alongside hiking side-by-side the Annapurna Range with grand views of the rocky terrain, alpine jungle, and high passes, you also get to experience the culture and traditions that date back hundreds of years. Away from the bustling day-to-day life, find serenity in the Himalayas, and be a part of the ancient lifestyle of the local communities during the 13-day Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake.

Your journey begins after an 8 to 9-hour drive from Kathmandu. Next, you begin the trek from Besi Sahar to Jagat ascending along the Marshyangdi River up to Kali Gandaki Gorge. The trail is decorated with terraced paddy fields, forests, and rugged terrains, with the cascading waterfalls giving you a soothing experience along the journey.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake package also takes you to some of the most spectacular destinations. Your first major attraction of the trip is Tilicho Lake. Situated at an altitude of 4,919 meters from sea level, Tilicho Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world. Untouched by modernization, the surrounding allows you to immerse in its serenity, while the pristine blue waters of the lake mesmerize travelers with its beauty.

Likewise, at 5,416 meters, the Thorong La Pass stands as the world’s highest pass. This is another highlight that shortly follows the Tilicho Lake trek, The journey to the pass is challenging, but the sense of accomplishment and the view of the surrounding peaks like the Annapurna Massif (Annapurna I to IV), Pisang Peak, Gangapurna, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Paungda Danda from here is uncanny.

After trekking to Thorong La Pass, you will make your way to the drier terrain with rich cultural, and historical significance. Manang, Lower Mustang, and Marpha, located toward the Nepal-Tibet border, allow you to immerse into a Tibetan-influenced lifestyle peculiar from the rest of the country.

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake: Unique Rituals and Customs of Manang

During the Nepal-Tibet war, Manang saw a massive influx of migrants from Tibet, significantly influencing its culture. As a result, the region, now, is heavily influenced by Tibetan culture, traditions, and lifestyle.

From the festivities to art and homeopathy practices, you will find peculiarities here. For instance, different from the rest of the country, Manang celebrates several festivals that wouldn’t resemble the rest of Nepal. Tibetan Lhosar, Tiji (peace festival), and Saga Dawa (the holiest day of the Buddhist Calendar) are some of the prominent celebrations of the region. Manang also has its Tibetan medical practices. You will be transported to a different era when you see local healers using herbal remedies and acupuncture to treat various ailments.

Another age-old practice is the Chod ritual. This is a practice where a person offers his or her own body and mind to the deities and hungry spirits. According to the locals, the Chod ritual purifies souls from negative karma.

Among all the customs, I found the ritual of Sky Burials the most fascinating in Manang. During this practice, the body of the deceased is placed on a high-altitude platform for the vultures to consume.  Besides the sky burial, there are conventional burial practices too. The locals believe sky burials to hasten the soul’s release from the physical body. Ground burials, where the body is interred in the Gompa, are also equally popular in Manang. Both burial practices are a testament to the region’s unique culture and religious beliefs.

Experience Manang. Check out our fixed departures for the Annapurna Circuit Trek with the Tilicho Lake package to book a spot. You can also request trek customization to extend your stay in Manang.
